the final, self-led project of my BA Visual Communication degree. following my love  for typography, art and book design, i created something bold and meaningful. my aim was to inform, educate and inspire.
Having always had a personal love of Jazz and Soul music, I began researching the lyrics and the powerful messages integrated into songs. This route inspired me to brainstorm concepts to help educate listeners and, through the power of typography, inform readers of the stories and historic events that are woven into these famous protest songs.
Focusing in on Nina Simone's Mississippi Goddam, I used the three tragic events that this song is based on to form the context of the book.
Breaking down the lyrics and presenting them in text form, allows the reader to appreciate the subtle messages and meanings, which the art of typography helped me exaggerate. Made up of real imagery and quotes, this book uses the lyrics from the song to create pace and structure, marrying the music and history.
In addition, I used my own charcoal sketches of Nina Simone to add texture to the heavily digital piece and reintroduce some contrast and a human touch.
For each project during my degree, it was required to create a process book which presents the pinnacle moments during the development and refinement stages. As this was my final and favourite project, I've chosen to give an insight into the process book that accompanies it.
